Domain Transfer

Move Your Domain Here. Keep Everything You Paid For.

Type the name and we check whether it can move and what that costs, before you commit to anything.

Check the name you own
Type the whole name, like mybusiness.com, to see whether it can move here.
Tell us what the site is, in a word or a sentence, and we suggest names, then check which ones are still available.

What a Transfer Involves

  • Unlock it and get the code

At your current provider, switch off the transfer lock and ask for the transfer code, sometimes called an auth or EPP code. We walk you through this for your provider.

  • You usually pay for a year

A transfer normally adds a year to the name, so the time you have already paid for is not lost. We show the cost before you start.

  • Two months must have passed

A name bought or moved within the last two months usually cannot move yet. We check that first, so you find out now rather than halfway through.

The Rules Every Transfer Follows

A few rules apply wherever your name is registered. A name cannot normally move within 60 days of being registered or last transferred. Some companies also block it for 60 days after you change the owner details, so do not update your name or email just before a move. Your provider then has up to five days to release the name, and if it does nothing the transfer goes through by itself. A completed transfer usually adds one year to the registration.

Most moves take five to seven days. You can often shorten that by approving the request at your old provider, when it offers that. Squarespace warns its transfers can take up to 15 days.

Getting the Code, Provider by Provider

GoDaddy

  1. In your Domain Portfolio, open the domain's settings.
  2. Switch the Transfer toggle off, which unlocks it. Turn off Domain Privacy and Domain Protection.
  3. Under Transfer, choose Transfer to Another Registrar and go through the checklist.
  4. Copy the authorization code. It is also emailed to the registrant address.

A domain sold in a bundle cannot move within 120 days of registration.

Namecheap

  1. In Domain List, select Manage next to the domain.
  2. Open the Sharing & Transfer tab.
  3. Under Transfer Out, switch off Registrar Lock and request the Auth Code.
  4. Check the registrant email address, which may differ from your account email.

Namecheap has five days to release the domain once the transfer starts.

Cloudflare

  1. Open Manage Domains under Registrar.
  2. Select Manage, then Configuration, then Unlock.
  3. Select Confirm and Unlock, and copy the authorization code.
  4. Approve the request when it arrives, or it completes by itself on the fifth day.

Changing the registrant details within 60 days also blocks a transfer here.

Squarespace

  1. In your domains dashboard, open the domain.
  2. Switch the Domain Lock toggle off.
  3. Select Request transfer code, then confirm your password.
  4. Find the email with the subject "Auth code for" your domain.

Requesting a new code cancels the older ones, so use the most recent. It should arrive within 24 hours.

A Good Fit For

  • A name you want connected to a website here, with no DNS to manage. Once the name is in your account, picking a website is all it takes, and the records and certificate are handled for you.
  • Keeping your names and websites in one account. You renew, change and connect everything from one place, and you no longer need to remember which company holds which login.

Not the Best Fit For

  • A name bought or moved in the last 60 days. It normally cannot transfer until that period ends, so wait, and in the meantime you can still connect it by adding the DNS records yourself.
  • Names you are about to let expire. A transfer can take a week or more and usually adds a paid year, so it makes little sense for a name you have already decided not to keep.

What You Get Once It Is Here

Moving a name is only worth the trouble if life is easier afterwards.

  • The connecting is done for you

We write the DNS records and join the name to your website ourselves. Nothing to look up and nothing to copy between accounts.

  • The padlock comes with it

The SSL certificate is issued when you pick the website, then renewed for as long as you use the name. It is not an extra.

  • Email on your name

Add hello@ or info@ on the name, and mail sent there lands in the inbox you already read. The forwarding and MX records are set up here.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a domain transfer take?

It varies with the old provider, and can take up to several days once started. Your current provider may let you approve it sooner. Your website carries on working as long as its DNS records stay in place.

Will my website go down during a transfer?

It should not, because moving a name to a new company does not change where it points by itself. Leave its DNS records as they are until the move has finished.

Why can I not transfer my domain?

The usual reasons are a lock still on at your provider, a name bought or moved in the last two months, or an expired name. Typing the name here tells you which it is.

Can I move a domain away from Static.app later?

Yes. The code you need is a click away in the name's menu and is emailed straight to you. Nothing here is built to make leaving difficult.

Can I connect a domain without transferring it?

Yes. You can leave it where it is and add the DNS records to your website yourself. A transfer is what makes the connecting automatic.
