Google Registry put .app on the HSTS preload list, so browsers refuse to open any .app address over plain HTTP. Here the certificate is issued when you pick the website.
A landing page, a support page and the privacy policy that app stores ask for are simple static pages, which is what we host.
We host websites, not servers. Your app's own API and database stay where they are, and a subdomain can point to them.

An app without a website has a problem, because app stores ask for pages you have to host somewhere: a support address and a privacy policy, at least. Add a landing page, and that is three simple pages that have nothing to do with the app's own servers.
That is the job a .app name does well here. Upload the pages, pick the website, and the certificate that .app requires is handled for you. Google Registry put the whole ending on the HSTS preload list when it opened in 2018, so without one the address simply does not open.
The limit is worth saying plainly. We host static files. A web app that compiles to plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript can run here and call its own API elsewhere. Anything needing server code or a database lives somewhere else, and a subdomain like api.yourname.app can point to it.
A registrar that only sells names will usually charge less for the name. What you get here is everything after it, in the same place as your website.
We write the DNS records and join the name to your website ourselves. Nothing to look up and nothing to copy between accounts.
The SSL certificate is issued when you pick the website, then renewed for as long as you use the name. It is not an extra.
Add hello@ or info@ on the name, and mail sent there lands in the inbox you already read. The forwarding and MX records are set up here.
Does a .app domain need an SSL certificate?
Yes, always. Browsers will not open a .app address without HTTPS. On a website here the certificate is handled for you.
Do I need an actual app to buy a .app?
No. Anyone can register one for any website. It reads best on a product or tool, because that is what people will expect.
Can I host my app on Static.app?
You can host the front end if it is built to plain files, along with its marketing pages. There is no server code, database or build step here, so anything needing those runs elsewhere.
Who runs .app?
Google Registry, which also runs .dev. Registrations opened in 2018.
What pages does an app need on its website?
At least a landing page, a support address and a privacy policy, since app stores ask for links to those. All three are simple static pages.
Do I need a paid plan?
The name is its own yearly purchase, and you can use it with a website kept anywhere. Connecting it to a website here needs a paid plan, from Starter. Free websites stay on a free subdomain.
Is the name mine, and can I move it later?
Yes. It is registered in your name, and the code you need to take it elsewhere is a click away in its menu. A name you already own elsewhere can move here the same way.
Other endings: .com domains, .co domains, .store domains, .shop domains, .xyz domains, .studio domains, .design domains, .io domains, .dev domains, .ai domains, .tech domains, all domain names
