What to Know Before Buying a .ai

  • Two years is the minimum

The registry sells .ai two years at a time, for new names and for renewals, wherever you buy. Check the two-year total before you compare it with a yearly price.

  • It costs more than most endings

Even the cheapest sellers charge about $80 a year, because of what the registry charges them. So expect to pay at least $160 up front, and more for a short name sold as premium.

  • Open to anyone, anywhere

It is the country code of Anguilla, but you do not need to live there or have a business there. Google lists it among the country codes it treats as generic, so it is not tied to one country in search.

Why .ai Costs What It Does

.ai went from a quiet country code to one of the most wanted endings in a few years. Registrations passed one million in January 2026, up from about 354,000 in 2023. The fees are a major source of income for Anguilla, an island of about 15,000 people: local reporting puts them at about US$85 million in 2025.

That demand shows in the price. The two-year minimum means your first payment is double what the yearly figure suggests, and the cheapest sellers we checked in November 2026 list about $80 a year. Renewals also come in two-year blocks, so you are committing to that amount each time.

Note the timing too. The first big wave of two-year registrations comes up for renewal from late 2026 through 2027, and the IMF has warned that the surge may not last. Neither changes how a .ai works today. Both are reasons to buy a name because you will use it, and not as a bet.

A Good Fit For

  • Products where AI is the point. People expect an AI tool to be on this ending, so the name does some of your explaining, and it fits in beside the best-known products in the field.
  • Names you plan to keep for several years. With a two-year minimum and a high yearly price, the cost only makes sense for a name you are confident about and intend to build on.

Not the Best Fit For

  • A business that only uses AI in passing. If AI is a feature and not the product, the ending overstates it and may date badly, while costing a good deal more than most alternatives.
  • Buying to resell, or as a short trial with a two-year minimum. You pay for two years up front whatever happens, and the IMF has warned that the current surge in demand may not last.

What the Price Pays For

A registrar that only sells names will usually charge less for the name. What you get here is everything after it, in the same place as your website.

  • The connecting is done for you

We write the DNS records and join the name to your website ourselves. Nothing to look up and nothing to copy between accounts.

  • The padlock comes with it

The SSL certificate is issued when you pick the website, then renewed for as long as you use the name. It is not an extra.

  • Email on your name

Add hello@ or info@ on the name, and mail sent there lands in the inbox you already read. The forwarding and MX records are set up here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I not buy a .ai for one year?

The registry sets a two-year minimum for registering and for renewing, so no seller can offer less. A price you see quoted per year is usually billed for two years at checkout.

What country is .ai?

Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. The letters were assigned as its country code long before they meant artificial intelligence, and anyone in the world can register one today.

Does a .ai domain hurt my Google ranking?

No. Google lists .ai among the country codes it treats as generic, the same way it treats .com, so it does not tie your website to Anguilla.

Do I need to be an AI company to buy one?

No. There are no rules about what the website does. It reads best on a product, tool or project that uses AI, because that is what people will assume when they see it.

Why are some .ai names so much more expensive?

Short names and common words are often sold as premium, at a price the registry or the current owner sets. Search marks a premium name, so you see the price before you pick it.

How many .ai domains are there?

More than one million, a figure passed in January 2026, up from about 354,000 in 2023.

Do I need a paid plan?

The name is its own yearly purchase, and you can use it with a website kept anywhere. Connecting it to a website here needs a paid plan, from Starter. Free websites stay on a free subdomain.

Is the name mine, and can I move it later?

Yes. It is registered in your name, and the code you need to take it elsewhere is a click away in its menu. A name you already own elsewhere can move here the same way.
